How to Grow Marigolds from Seed

For optimal results, start your marigolds in a pot or tray with damp potting mix. Sprinkle a thin layer of soil over the seeds and cover the container with plastic wrap. Marigolds do not require light to germinate, so simply place them in a warm spot. Typically, marigolds will sprout in 3-4 days, though the process may take longer in cooler climates.

Once the seedlings have emerged, remove the plastic wrap and place them in an area that receives at least 5-6 hours of sunlight per day. When the plants develop their second set of leaves, they can be transplanted. For direct sowing in the ground, cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil and thin the seedlings to 8-18 inches apart.
